VAL är en multifunktionell performance- och ljusskulptur och nutida tolkning av den nomadiska cirkustraditionen. Cirkusartisten Tom Brand rör sig i det mångvetenskapliga området och med VAL undersöker han vad som utgör en digital fossil och hur en hittar harmoni i algoritmer.

Under sitt residens hos Riksteatern fick Tom Brand möjlighet att arbeta med prototyper och vidareutvecklade konceptet bakom VAL, främst med det tekniska teamet bakom projektet. Under 2024 kommer Tom fortsätta arbeta med olika multidisciplinära verk med installationen.

Specialiserad i Vertical Rope tog Tom Brand examen från Stockholms konstnärliga högskola (tidigare kallad DOCH, Dans och Cirkushögskolan ) 2014. Tillsammans med tre av sina medstudenter grundade han sedan Svalbard Company, ett multikonstkompani baserat på cirkus. Tom turnerade i Europa, Asien, Australien och Sydamerika med kompaniets första produktion All genius all idiot.

VAL kan visas i olika utrymmen både inom- och utomhus. De kontrollerbara LED-ljusen fungerar som en skärm, uppdelade i linjer och spridda i ett tredimensionellt utrymme. VAL kan presenteras som en ljusskulptur eller användas som en plats för olika evenemang där konstnärer och publik interagerar med den.

VAL is a multifunctional performance and light sculpture and contemporary interpretation of the nomadic circus tradition. Circus artist Tom Brand moves in the multidisciplinary field and with VAL he explores what constitutes a digital fossil and how to find harmony in algorithms.

During his residency at Riksteatern, Tom Brand had the opportunity to work with prototypes and further developed the concept behind VAL, mainly with the technical team behind the project. In 2024, Tom will continue to work on various multidisciplinary works with the installation.

Specializing in Vertical Rope, Tom Brand graduated from Stockholm University of the Arts (formerly DOCH) in 2014. Together with three of his fellow students, he then founded Svalbard Company, a multi-arts company based on circus. Tom toured Europe, Asia, Australia and South America with the company's first production All genius all idiot.

VAL can be displayed in various indoor and outdoor spaces. The controllable LED lights act as a screen, divided into lines, and spread in a threedimensional space. VAL can be presented as a light sculpture or used as a venue for various events where artists and audiences interact with it.
